A heat wave sweeping parts of India, including the capital New Delhi, has left more than 500 people dead.

The death toll was likely to rise, officials told the AFP.

"The majority of the victims are people who have been exposed to the sun directly, usually aged 50 and above and from the working classes," said P Tulsi Rani, special commissioner of Andhra Pradesh's disaster management department.

Sikh man Harman Singh, who won global praise when he overlooked religious protocol to remove his turban and cradle the head of an injured boy, has been surprised with a new suite of furniture for his home.

On May 15, Daejon Pahia, 5, was struck by a car in Auckland, New Zealand, and was left with a serious injury to the head. 22-year-old Singh, who lives close by, rushed out when he heard the incident and took off his turban to help staunch the flow of blood, according to the New Zealand Herald.
