
A grand jury in Baltimore, Maryland indicted all six police officers allegedly involved in the killing of Freddie Gray, a black man who died in police custody there in April
Baltimore State Attorney Marilyn Mosby had already charged the officers with various crimes on May 1 — including manslaughter and second degree depraved-heart murder for some — but she now has the support of a civilian jury to back her up
Gray died after police chased him down for making eye contact with an officer. They arrested Gray, handcuffed him and placed him in the back of a police van without a seatbelt. Officers later stopped the van to shackle Gray's legs. At some point during the van ride, Gray allegedly suffered a fatal injury, largely because his limbs were tied up and he was left to roll around in the back of the van. He died in part due to a mostly severed spine. His passing sparked several weeks of protests and temporary riots in the city that sometimes escalated into clashes between residents and police.
