
Islamic State militants have seized the ancient ruins of Palmyra in the Syrian province of Homs, activists and residents of the city say, after taking control of a neighboring town from government forces.
Footage from the city, released by a pro-ISIS media arm after the group seized control of the city on Thursday, shows a deserted drive through the empty streets in the northeast of Tadmur, on a road that leads to the World Heritage Site of Palmyra.
Given the militants' history of destroying and defacing works of irreplaceable ancient art and architecture, activists and officials are concerned about what's in store for the 2,000 year old UNESCO World Heritage Site.
