Charleston shooting and police killing stem from same racism, residents say

A Facebook photo of the white alleged murderer of nine black church attendees in Charleston, South Carolina shows him wearing a jacket with the flag of apartheid-era South Africa, a symbol of racism if there ever was one


As the killer was murdering them inside the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, he reportedly told a victim he had to do it, because black people had "raped our women, and you are taking over the country."


In April in North Charleston — a separate city but geographically connected — a white police officer named Michael Slager shot and killed a black man named Walter Scott as Scott fled for his life following a fairly normal traffic stop.
